Ethical Principles for the Management and Restitution of Colonial Collections in Belgium

In October 2018, some sixty academics and professional staff from the museum and heritage sector put their name under an opinion article in two Belgian newspapers that emphasized the need for a serious debate on the restitution of African cultural heritage acquired by Belgian museums during the colonial period. The article called for the development of ethical guidelines for the Belgian museum sector with respect to the management and restitution of colonial collections.

En octobre 2018, une soixantaine d'universitaires et de professionnels du secteur des musées et du patrimoine ont signé dans deux journaux belges une carte blanche qui soulignait la nécessité d'un sérieux débat sur la restitution du patrimoine culturel africain acquis par les musées belges pendant la période coloniale. Un appel était lancé pour qu'au sein du secteur muséal belge soient élaborées des lignes directrices éthiques en matière de gestion et de restitution des collections coloniales.

In oktober 2018 zetten een zestigtal academici en professionelen uit de museum- en erfgoedsector hun naam onder een opinieartikel in twee Belgische kranten waarin de noodzaak werd benadrukt van een ernstig debat over de teruggave van Afrikaans cultureel erfgoed verworven door Belgische musea tijdens de koloniale periode. Het artikel riep op tot de ontwikkeling van ethische richtlijnen voor de Belgische museumsector met betrekking tot het beheer en de restitutie van koloniale collecties.
